From Canada to South Korea: Josh Newton’s Journey!

Hello Phillipines!!!! My name is Josh Newton, I’m a Canadian living and acting in South Korea. You might know me from random K-Dramas but my biggest role to date was ‘Andrea’ from the drama ‘The Good Bad Mother’.

A huge huge thank you to Henry at “City Writer” for contacting me and asking if I’d like to have a small interview. It means a lot to me and I am grateful 🙏 Thank you so much!!!

What’s the hardest role you’ve ever played, and why?

  • I just did an audition where all my lines were in Arabic. If I get the role then that will definitely be the hardest role because I have zero experience with the Arabic language. I will have to practice very hard in a short amount of time hahahaah

The most fun role you’ve ever played, and why?

  • I always have the most fun when a role requires something physical. I have always been a huge fan of action movies and stunts so any time I get to do some action scenes it is always fun. The LG TV commercial where I was a soldier, recently did a night time action scene, in the movie ‘Hunt’ when I had my chase scene…anything with physicality is a lot of fun.

What’s your dream role that you want to portray, and why?

  • Oh man, my dream role?!?! I think that’s a tough question to answer at the moment because I am still so new in the industry and honestly, haven’t had that much variety in Korea. As a foreigner I am mostly cast as a drug dealer/business man, some kind of killer or a doctor. I want to explore more roles and maybe I will discover something I am very interested in. Of course, I would love to be a main character in a film or TV series but I don’t think I am a good enough actor at the moment to carry a picture, so getting a co-star role would be awesome experience to level up my abilities and then move into a main role.

Your advice to aspiring actors?

  • I will share a couple thoughts I have had over the last few weeks. First, learn languages. An amazing thing happens where you come to understand one line cannot be delivered the same way in different languages and often times when learning lines, we get stuck in one way of saying something. But if you say it in a different language it forces you to feel the words differently and view the situation in a different way. Second, take some time to live abroad. Not only does it open your world view, leads to unknown connections but it also means if you move somewhere and want to try acting, you will be a minority and it MIGHT (depending where you go) be easier to get small roles/acting work which would be difficult to get in your home country. Lastly, a piece of advice I hang onto that I saw Tom Hanks say in an interview once, “This too will pass”. It applies to bad times and good times. Over the years I have hung onto this because there have been some VERY ROUGH patches in my 4 years but, they eventually pass and when it hits the good patches, remember, the good times will also pass.

Last question, fun fact people might not be aware of.

Fun Fact???!!!! hahahah hmmmmm…….I absolutely love animals. Growing up my family always had pets and I terribly miss having a companion and look forward to the day I can have some in my life again. I used to have a guinea pig, a rabbit, my brother had a rabbit and we had 2 dogs. I miss them all!

Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude to Josh for graciously providing us with his photographs for the article. I sincerely hope that his strong work ethic and career aspirations have served as a source of inspiration for our readers. Let us all continue to extend our support to him.
