We’re thrilled to have Fairy Mai with us today. an “Oriental Goblin Fairy,” she brings rebellious energy and undeniable charisma to the stage.  From her time in eite to her explosive solo debut with “Lipstick,” and now the successful release of her single “Light Please,” Fairy Mai’s journey is one of captivating transformations. Let’s delve into her unique artistry and what’s next for this compelling force in K-Pop.”

What inspired you to pursue a career in the K-pop industry?
When I was little, I watched an animated version of The Little Mermaid singing, and I wanted to sing like her. As I sang along, I realized I could actually do it quite well. That’s how I naturally fell in love with music. Over time, singing began to feel like my own language, and I think that’s why I chose this path.

You’ve performed under different names like Sia, Sion, and now Fairy Mai. What do these changes signify? What does ‘Fairy Mai’ mean to you?
Since I was young, I wanted people to call me “Sion,” and “Sia” was a variation of that name.

But “Fairy Mai” best represents who I am now. “Fairy” is the fantasy-like version of me that only exists on stage, and “Mai” evokes images like dance, flowers, spring, and liberation. I chose this name because I want to live as a being that shines through emotions and energy rather than reality.

What was the most challenging part of being a trainee and a member of eite? How did you overcome it?
As a trainee, the uncertainty of when things would happen was tough. During group activities, having to wake up early every single day was the hardest part. I’m a “sleep fairy” by nature, so lack of sleep was painful. But whenever I saw fans reacting to our performances, the exhaustion would melt away.

What are the biggest differences between group and solo activities? Which do you feel suits you more?
Being solo comes with the pressure of doing everything alone, but I can express my emotions and energy more honestly, which I love. Still, it doesn’t necessarily mean I prefer solo work—I sometimes miss having group members around, too.

Your debut track “Light Please” is quite powerful. What message and style does it convey?
Light Please was born from a desire to break free from emotionless routines and a boxed-in reality. Just like nothing is visible without light, I felt I was losing myself in a world without emotion. The message is: burn it all down and be reborn. Sonically, it blends rock guitar riffs and heavy bass with explosive emotional energy.

“Lipstick” and “Light Please” have different vibes. How would you define your musical direction?
Though both songs are part of the same Fairy Mai universe, they have distinct textures. Right now, I’m exploring many genres, but rather than sticking to one, I focus on “energy” and “emotion” as my creative compass. In the end, if people say, “This song is so Fairy Mai,” that’s enough for me.

Your unique concept, “Oriental Goblin Fairy,” stands out. How did it come about, and how does it reflect your personality or artistry?
There’s a bright light within me, but also shadows I don’t fully know. I wanted to express a being where both coexist—and the phrase “Goblin Fairy” came to mind. I’m beautiful and gentle, but emotional chaos and tangled feelings are also part of me.

Are there any artists who influenced you or that you admire?
I really admire Billie Eilish and BiBi. Both don’t confine themselves to one genre—they expand their inner worlds through music. That’s what I want to do too: create something distinctly mine.

What message do you hope to deliver to your fans through your music?

If I’m a fairy that only exists on stage, then I hope even the most exhausting days in reality can feel like a dreamy dance party when you’re with me. Forget the heavy thoughts—just dance with the rhythm and release your stress.

What kind of music do you want to explore?
This year, I want to strengthen my stage presence even more. I want to fully unlock my “fairy mode” and connect with more people. Musically, I’d like to try more mainstream sounds and continue creating songs that naturally blend EDM and K-pop.

Are there any artists you dream of collaborating with?
There are too many to pick just one… But whether they’re domestic or international, I want to work with artists who have a strong, distinct identity—and do high-energy performances together.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time outside of music?
I love watching cute animal videos! I also enjoy reading novels—especially fantasy or emotionally deep stories. And zoning out while playing puzzle games is very healing for me.

How do you manage the stress and pressure of a busy K-pop schedule? Any personal tips for mental or physical well-being?
Eating and sleeping well—those are non-negotiables. I always make time for myself to recharge, even if it’s just zoning out. That alone time is a key part of my recovery routine.

What advice would you give to trainees or aspiring K-pop artists?
It’s not an easy road, but eventually, sincerity shows on stage. Even if the world ignores you, if you believe in yourself, the light will come. Don’t rush—believe to the end, endure to the end. “If you want the light, just become the light.”
