From heartfelt lyrics to soulful melodies, Hwina is emerging as one of Korea’s most captivating singer-songwriters. Since her debut with Like A Tree, she’s been crafting music that speaks to life’s quiet emotions — from self-growth to love and reflection.

In this exclusive written interview, Hwina opens up about her creative journey, the stories behind her music, and what it means to find her own voice in today’s ever-changing music scene.

How did your journey as a singer and songwriter begin?

  • Music has been as natural to me as breathing since I was young. When I was clumsy at expressing my emotions, letting them flow through songs made me feel a little more comfortable. That accumulated, and eventually, I had a desire to create and sing my own stories. I think that was the beginning of Hwina.

What made you debut as a solo artist with “Like A Tree”?

  • “Like A Tree” was like a resolution I was sending to myself. I wanted to be someone who could take root and not break down, even if I was shaken in any situation.

The album title is poetic. What meaning does “Like A Tree” hold for you?

  • I think trees are quiet but strong beings. They support themselves with invisible roots and show new appearances with each changing season. I also wanted to be such a person, to make such music.

How would you describe your music style to someone who is listening to it for the first time?

  • I would say it’s music that is calm but gently touches one side of your heart. Songs that slowly permeate your emotions the more you listen to them, eventually captivating your ears.

Where do you mainly get inspiration for your lyrics or melodies?

  • I honestly capture the things I’ve experienced, the emotions I’ve felt, and the process of gradually growing within them. Rather than stories to show someone, they come from a desire to be honest with myself. Ultimately, my music is like a diary that records ‘the me of now.’

Can you tell us about your creative process when writing a new song?

  • It usually starts with a single word or sentence. I hum and let the atmosphere of that sentence flow, finding the melody. I attach the lyrics last, as if organizing my emotions. Ultimately, it feels like a process of finding ‘what I really want to say at this moment.’

Which of the songs you’ve released so far holds the most personal meaning for you?

  • It’s ‘Break You Down.’ This song contains the things that tried to break me down during a difficult time, and the determination not to give in even if I waver within them. I cried a lot while working on it, and at the same time, it was a song where I discovered the strength within me.

Are there any domestic or international artists you would like to collaborate with?

  • AKMU’s Lee Chanhyuk. His music always stimulates me because humor, seriousness, reality, and imagination are naturally mixed together. I want to create music that contains my sincerity within that freedom with him.

Your music and visuals have a natural sensibility and a warm atmosphere. What does this aesthetic mean to you as an artist?

  • That’s probably because I really like ‘as is’ moments. Capturing the emotions I feel as they are has great meaning to me.

How do you overcome times when you don’t feel inspired?

  • Instead, I go out into nature, sleep, or watch movies or dramas to clear my head. If I leave it empty like that, music suddenly comes to me on its own at some point.

What message or emotion do you hope people feel when they listen to your music?

  • I hope they feel a sense of “It’s okay.” I want to offer comfort that it’s okay not to be perfect, and it’s okay to go slow. I hope my music can be like a blanket that gently covers someone’s day.

Since your debut in 2023, has there been any change in your perspective or attitude towards music?

  • At first, I felt a lot of pressure to “do well.” Now, I’m slowly learning that “sincerity is enough.” Music ultimately has to resemble me.

What is one unexpected aspect of you that fans might not know from seeing you on stage?

  • Some people think I’m quiet, but I’m actually quite playful and outgoing around people I’m comfortable with and like. I’m calm on stage, but in everyday life, I’m quite down-to-earth.

Can you give us a little hint about any new projects or your next song that you’re preparing?

  • In the past, I used to think a lot about “I should do this next,” but these days, I’m trying to just wait for the music to come out of the emotions that flow naturally. I think that’s a more authentic way for me. Please look forward to music that is truly Hwi Na!

Finally, is there anything you want to say to the fans who have supported you from the beginning?

  • I’m always grateful. Truly. The reason I can continue to make music is ultimately thanks to your hearts. Let’s walk together slowly and for a long time, just like now. I love you 💜
