In the ever-evolving landscape of Korean indie music, Hanlim continues to carve out her own distinct space as a singer-songwriter who turns raw emotions into heartfelt melodies. Since making her solo debut in 2020 with the single “Don’t Let Me Fall Asleep,” she has steadily built a discography that reflects honesty, vulnerability, and artistic growth.

With her delicate yet expressive vocals and self-penned lyrics, Hanlim captures moments of love, longing, and quiet reflection in a way that resonates deeply with listeners. From intimate ballads to R&B-infused tracks, her music reveals not only her versatility but also her commitment to storytelling through sound.

In this interview, we sit down with Hanlim to talk about her journey as an independent artist, the inspirations behind her music, and the memories that shaped her path as a singer-songwriter.

You made your solo debut in 2020 with the single “Don’t Let Me Fall Asleep.” Looking back on that moment, what stands out the most in your memory?

One of the most memorable moments was having meetings with various staff members and creating the album art, profile, and music video step by step together. Since everything was new to me, it felt unfamiliar at times, but at the same time, it was an incredibly fascinating and enjoyable experience.

What inspired you to pursue a career as a singer-songwriter? We’re curious about why you chose the path of a solo artist instead of continuing with group activities or focusing solely on being a composer.

I majored in vocal performance at Hanlim Multi Art School starting when I was 17. While preparing for entrance exams, I developed vocal nodules and couldn’t practice singing for a while. During that time, at my parents’ suggestion, I began learning how to compose music.

Once I tried it, I realized it suited me well, and I naturally continued writing songs. Now, spending time composing brings me more joy than anything else.

When you compare your early debut songs with your recent releases, in what ways do you feel you’ve grown the most as an artist?

When I first started making music, I think I mostly limited myself to the R&B genre. Recently, however, I’ve been challenging myself with various genres and expanding the range of my expression, and in that sense, I feel that I’ve truly grown as an artist.

Your music has a warm and introspective atmosphere that leaves a strong impression. Where do you usually find inspiration for your lyrics?

I sometimes draw inspiration from my own real-life experiences, but I also get ideas from many different sources—such as movies, dramas, webtoons, the weather, or even a sentence I happen to come across while passing by. It feels like every moment of daily life can become a source of inspiration for me.

When you’re working on a song, which usually comes to you first—the melody or the lyrics?

I tend to decide on the song’s title (or main theme) first. Once I have that, the lyrics and melody often come to me almost at the same time.

Could you briefly introduce your creative process when making a new song?

First, I determine the main theme of the song. Then, I build the framework by adding lyrics and melody that fit that theme. After that, I work on the chord progression to shape the overall mood. For the arrangement—such as sound design and instrument selection—I discuss ideas with the friends I collaborate with and complete the song together.

Among the songs you’ve released so far, which one holds the most personal meaning for you? Please tell us why as well.

It’s 적당하게 (Lukewarm). It was the first song I prepared entirely on my own, without collaborating with a production company. It also carries a bossa nova mood that I personally love, which makes me feel even more attached to it.

I think the soft vocals and piano- and guitar-centered sound are key characteristics of your music. How would you describe your own musical identity?

I aim to create easy-listening music with a warm, comfortable groove that you can feel as soon as you hear the song.

Are there any artists or genres that have influenced you musically?

When I was young, I listened to albums by Musiq Soulchild and developed a love for groove-driven music. Since then, I believe I’ve been greatly influenced by the R&B genre.

What was the biggest challenge or experience that helped you grow the most as an artist?

–Producing 적당하게 (Lukewarm) was the turning point that led to my greatest growth. From songwriting to mixing, mastering, distribution, and even preparing my profile, I handled and coordinated every step of the process myself.

Through that experience, I was able to learn a great deal—not only about music, but also about the aspects beyond it.

Many listeners say they find comfort in your music. What message would you like to convey through your songs?

– Many of my songs are based on simple and universal emotions. I hope to express feelings that anyone can relate to and connect with.

If you were to compare your music to a season or a time of day, what would it be? Why?

I would like to say all four seasons. For me, the seasons are a major source of inspiration when writing songs.

I hope my music naturally comes to mind as the seasons change. That’s why I’ve released many songs with distinct seasonal colors, such as 봄이잖아요, 여름밤에, and 눈이 내리니까.

Your music is reaching fans beyond Korea. What does it mean to you to receive love from international listeners?

Even though most of my songs have Korean lyrics, I’m truly grateful that people still listen to them. At the same time, it feels amazing and fascinating.

I believe the greatest power of music is its ability to convey emotions beyond language.

Do you have a message you’d like to share with your fans in the Philippines?

Hello. Thank you sincerely for listening to my music even from afar. I truly hope that one day I can meet you in person through a live performance. 🤍

15. Do you have any plans or intentions to perform in the Philippines?

If the opportunity is given, I would absolutely love to perform there at least once!

Is there a music style or concept you’d like to challenge yourself with in the future?

Many of my songs carry a jazz-influenced color. Moving forward, I would like to challenge myself with authentic jazz tracks that highlight scat singing or instrumental solos.

Is there any artist you would like to collaborate with?

Among Korean artists, I would love to work with John Park. I’ve been a fan since I was young, so I hope to collaborate with him someday.

What goals would you like to achieve in the next few years?

Since I don’t have a full-length studio album yet, my biggest goal is to prepare and release a well-crafted full album. After that, I’d like to expand my activities by gaining experience performing overseas as well.
