Prepare to be enchanted! This interview introduces SMS, a dynamic five-member Filipino girl group composed of the incredibly talented Alyanna, Joy, Zyrene, Nina, and Selina. Discover their musical journey and the magic they bring to the stage.
FOR ALYANNA: What’s your favorite aspect of being a performer?
I really love how we can express ourselves through performing. Performing is actually a great outlet for me, personally. Whatever I’m feeling, I use it to fuel my performance. It makes me feel good because it’s something I am really passionate about and something that I’ve always dreamed of doing; now that I get to do it literally every single day of my life is amazing and such a huge blessing that I actually get to do something I truly love for a living. Another thing I love about being a performer is seeing how it can make others happy. Knowing that what I do makes people happy is something that makes me feel happy and fulfilled about what I do.
FOR JOY: What’s your creative process like when contributing to the group’s music?
I am usually involved in making the melody. During the process of creating a song, I realized that melodies allow me to express emotions in a way that words sometimes can’t. Most of the time, the lyrics would already be composed by the other members so I would mainly contribute in finalizing the song’s melody — finding the right one that fits the lyrics and ensuring that all feelings will be well-conceived. Overall, it’s a fun, collaborative process we all get to share in SMS.
FOR ZYRENE: What’s one skill you’ve learned since joining SMS?
One thing I’ve learned from joining SMS is how to collaborate with other artists. Since everyone has different skills and experiences, we also have unique personalities, routines, and—above all—performance styles.
It was initially difficult for us when SMS started because we’re so used to emphasizing our individual uniqueness and strengths as solo performers — especially in my case, since I’ve been performing alone since I was a kid.
As we grow together, I’ve learned how to adjust my performance, energy, and style to fit a group setting instead of doing it alone. We discovered how to better complement one another, and we are still working to better understand ourselves and each other while performing as a group.
FOR NINA: What’s your favorite type of fan interaction?
Seeing the fans sing and dance along to our performances always brings a smile to my face. Their enjoyment and support give us an extra boost to keep going. Taking photos together and hearing their heartfelt messages means so much. It reminds us that we’ve formed a genuine connection with them through our lyrics and performances.
FOR SELINA: What’s your biggest personal goal outside of music?
A personal goal of mine has always been to be a professional ballet dancer — a passion I’ve been fulfilling since I was 4. This was the main reason I got to appreciate the art of dance and a big reason as to why I became a member of SMS. Dancing gave me the opportunity to travel to different countries and compete against other amazing dancers from all over the world. Learning and developing as a dancer has been so challenging yet fulfilling, which is why until now I’ve continued training despite its difficulty.
