For readers who are discovering you for the first time, could you introduce yourself and tell us about your musical journey?
Hello! I’m singer-songwriter Shin Soojung, and I’m currently active in South Korea. It’s an honor to meet you all. 🙂
What inspired you to pursue the path of a singer-songwriter?
Ever since I was very young, I was certain that music was what I wanted to do. That feeling has never wavered—not even for a moment. More than anything, I had a strong desire to write and sing my own songs. I felt that I could express my sincerity best by telling my own stories rather than someone else’s. Naturally, that led me down the path of becoming a singer-songwriter.
What is your most memorable music-related moment from childhood, and how has it influenced you as an artist today?
There was a time when I expressed feelings through music that I couldn’t easily put into words. Music became another language for me when I couldn’t be completely honest otherwise. It was then that I realized, “This is how I want to communicate with the world.” I believe that moment has had the greatest influence on who I am as an artist today.
How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?
I often write about emotions that haven’t yet been fully understood or sorted out. My music ranges from gentle acoustic sounds to energetic band-driven tracks, but regardless of the style, storytelling through my voice is always at the heart of it. I like to think my music can be there for people in both their happiest and saddest moments.
Which artists or musicians have had the greatest influence on your music and songwriting?
I deeply admire IU. When I was younger, I watched the Korean drama Dream High, and it inspired me to dream of attending a school like that and becoming a musician myself. She played a huge role in shaping and defining my dreams.
What is your usual songwriting process?
When I start writing a song, I usually turn on the voice recorder on my phone and play the guitar while freely singing or speaking whatever comes to mind. Sometimes an entire first verse comes together instantly, and other times a single phrase catches my attention. I pour out the story I want to tell alongside my guitar, then later add other instruments and build the overall sound.
Do your songs mainly come from personal experiences, or are they inspired by stories and observations around you?
It’s difficult to say it’s only one or the other. Most of my songs are autobiographical, but I often blend in stories from people around me and my own thoughts and observations.
Which of your original songs best represents who you are today, and why?
I would choose 한마디(A Word) It was my debut song, and I feel it captures the sound I want to express most clearly. More importantly, I think it reflects my identity better than any other song I’ve written.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take away from your music?
I hope people feel that they are not alone. Whether they’re happy or sad, I want them to know that there is someone who can celebrate with them and cry with them. Music gave me that kind of comfort and strength, and I hope to share those same feelings with my listeners.
As an independent artist, what has been your most rewarding moment?
During a performance of my song “재(empty)”, I saw an audience member quietly crying. I wrote that song hoping it could cry on behalf of people during difficult times. Seeing someone moved to tears made me feel that my message had truly reached them. I was grateful that the song could share that moment of sorrow with them. It’s a memory I’ll never forget.
What has been the biggest challenge in your musical career, and how did you overcome it?
The challenge hasn’t been musical itself. As an independent artist working largely on my own, it’s difficult to get people to discover my music. No matter how hard you work, if nobody hears it, it can feel like you’re simply talking to yourself. However, my song 저마다의 바다(my own ocean) recently received a lot of love from listeners in several countries, which gave me hope. I’ll continue working hard, so please keep supporting me. 🙂
How do you maintain creativity when inspiration doesn’t come easily?
I have a habit of taking notes regularly, so I often revisit old notes for inspiration. I also find ideas through movies, animation, and other creative works. Sometimes deep conversations with friends inspire me as well.
What role does social media play in connecting with your fans?
It plays a huge role. I see it as a platform and gateway for introducing who Shin Soojung is. No matter how far apart we are or what time zone we live in, social media allows us to communicate anytime, which is one of its greatest strengths.

Is there a message from a fan or a special experience that has stayed with you?
There was a fan who traveled a very long distance to see me perform. Unfortunately, I wasn’t feeling my best that day, and I felt I hadn’t given the performance I wanted to give. Despite that, the fan loved it and has continued supporting me ever since. I’m incredibly grateful for that. Every reaction and message from my fans gives me strength.
How do you prepare yourself mentally before a performance or recording session?
I remind myself not to focus on being perfect, but on being honest. When I try too hard, things can feel forced. So I try to relax and focus on singing sincerely and truthfully.
What is the most memorable moment of your music career so far?
People have occasionally sent me videos of my songs playing in places like cafés and campgrounds. Realizing that someone was listening to my music, even in places I knew nothing about, made me incredibly happy.
Is there a song or project that has been your biggest challenge as an artist?
Yes, it’s my upcoming single, scheduled for release on July 8. The song is quite different from my usual style, making it a new challenge for me. It’s an upbeat, hopeful track that carries the message, “Let’s rise and fly together!” I hope you’ll give it lots of love and support. 🙂
Is there an artist you would love to collaborate with, and why?
I’d love to work with Ha Hyunsang because I genuinely enjoy his music. I feel that combining his musical style with mine could create something completely new and exciting.
Can you give fans a sneak peek at any upcoming music or projects?
I’d love to! My new single, set for release on July 8, is a fresh challenge for me because it’s different from the kind of music I usually make. It’s a fast-paced, uplifting song with the message, “Let’s rise and fly together!” Please look forward to it and show it lots of love. 🙂
Outside of music, what hobbies or interests help you relax and recharge?
I enjoy going for walks and shopping. I also collect small animal figurines.
What advice would you give to aspiring singer-songwriters?
Being able to make music together is one of life’s greatest joys. I’ll always be cheering you on!
