In this edition of City Stories, we sit down with Nightly to talk about their creative journey, the experiences that have shaped their music, life on the road, and what lies ahead for the band. Join us as we explore the story behind the songs with one of alternative pop’s most captivating acts.

Can you introduce yourselves and share how you first came together in Nashville?

Hey! We’re Jonny, Joey, and Nick! Joey and I (Jonny) are cousins, and we moved here to be surrounded by music. Nick moved a few years later, and we all met at church.

What inspired the name “Nightly,” and how does it reflect your music and identity as a band?

The first song we wrote was called “The Night.” We never released it, but we loved the idea of having the word “night” in our name. We came up with “Night, Love You,” then shortened it to Nightly.

How has your journey evolved since your debut EP Honest?

I think we’ve just gotten much more comfortable and confident in who we are as songwriters and producers. We feel more free to tell our story.

How would you describe your signature sound to someone hearing you for the first time?

It changes a little bit album to album depending what we’re inspired by, but there is usually some element of nostalgia. we like to say we make music to drive to.

Your music often carries a nostalgic, late-night vibe—what inspires that atmosphere?

Probably some of the music that we love, as well as the environment we’re in. That always feels like the music we want to listen to when driving or flying, and it feels like the soundtrack to a movie.

Can you walk us through your songwriting process as a group? Do you usually start with lyrics, melody, or production when creating a track?

It’s a little different each time. We usually like to start with a lyric idea because then we already know what we want to say. But there are plenty of days when we don’t have a lyric idea right away, so we start with the music and focus on creating a vibe. Then, the lyrics come after.

What was the inspiration behind your latest album the void?

We randomly had the idea to do a surprise Halloween album. I have no idea why, but we just got really inspired by Ghostbusters and Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and thought it’d be fun to make something with that vibe as a band. We only had a month to make it, which was actually really fun because we didn’t have time to second-guess anything and felt more free.

Is there a track from the album that feels most personal to you? Why?

Probably either “Are You Downtown Tonight” or “1989.” We actually had the idea for “1989” a couple of years earlier and wrote three different versions before we finally landed on one we loved.

How do you think your sound has grown or changed in this release compared to your earlier work?

Probably just by exploring other themes and areas of music that we’ve never explored before. We love getting lost in a concept and seeing what we can find. It’s really unlike any other album we’ve made, and I can say the same thing about the new one we’re working on now. 😁

You’ve toured with major artists—what has been your most memorable tour experience so far?

Top two have to be headlining the Ryman here in Nashville, which is such an iconic venue, or going to Southeast Asia for the first time. The thought of going to the other side of the world and having people know your music is wild!

How do you connect with fans during live shows?

We like to get up in the crowd whenever we can, but even just feeling their energy fuels us to put on the best show we possibly can.

What can fans expect from a Nightly live performance?

We always bring our all to the stage. Each night is a unique experience, and we try to stay in the moment. The vibes are immaculate!

Your fanbase continues to grow worldwide—how does it feel to see your music reach different countries?

It’s insane. Really hard to comprehend, but we’re so grateful every day.

Do you have a message for your fans in the Philippines?

We love you so much!! Our first show there was one of the best days of our lives, and we can’t wait to come back!

What are your biggest musical influences right now?

Holly Humberstone, Bruce Springsteen, and The Police.

If Nightly had to describe your music in three words, what would they be?

Makes you feel

What’s a song (not yours) you wish you had written?

“You Get What You Give” by The New Radicals.

Any behind-the-scenes moments while recording that fans would be surprised to hear?

Pretty much every day, haha. You never know where an idea will come from!

What’s next for this year?

lots more music!

Any plans to tour in Asia or visit the Philippines soon?

We’re working very hard to hopefully come back this year!
