In this interview, we get to know Karasu Music PH, an independent music collective built on raw emotion, storytelling, and creative freedom. Inspired by the symbolism of “karasu,” the Japanese word for crow, the group embraces themes of depth, darkness, and honesty in their music.

Blending hip hop with band-style arrangements and alternative influences, Karasu Music PH creates songs that reflect real-life experiences—ranging from struggle and heartbreak to depression and self-growth.

Let’s Get to Know Karasu Music PH!

How did you start your journey as a rapper, and what pushed you into hip-hop?

I was in a band way back before I started doing hip hop. My bandmates became so busy, and we didn’t have time for gigs anymore, so I started going solo. I also believed in myself that I could make songs.

What does the name “Karasu” mean to you, and why did you choose it as your stage identity?

I really like crows, and in Japanese, “karasu” means crow.

How would you describe your style as an artist in three words?

Raw, emotional, and dark.

Who are your biggest musical influences, both local and international?

The biggest influences on my hip hop journey are Eminem, Juice WRLD, and locally, Abra.

What themes or stories do you usually write about in your songs?

I usually compose lyrics based on whatever comes to my mind, not depending on my mood. Most of them are about depression, drugs, and heartbreak.

How do you usually build a track—from beat selection to final recording?

I usually build tracks on my own. My lyrics are mostly freestyle, and during recording, my producer often gives me great suggestions that help turn the song into a much better track.

Do you prefer storytelling rap, lyrical rap, or more vibe-based tracks—and why?

I really like storytelling. It can cut deep into the heart of someone listening to it.

What challenges have you experienced as an independent rapper in the Philippines?

I could say that the most challenging part of being an independent rapper is finding gigs where I can perform and connect with people. It’s really hard to get gigs. In my hometown, hip hop events aren’t that big because most gigs there are focused on bands.

What makes your sound different from other emerging rappers?

Maybe it’s the flow of the songs themselves. I create rap songs with the energy and flow of a band, mixing both styles together to make them more catchy.

Are there any artists you want to collaborate with in the future?

I want to collaborate with Russ someday.

How do you prepare for collaborations when working with other producers or rappers?

I’m always prepared. I don’t overcomplicate things. If you have great respect for the producer or co-artist, you don’t feel nervous—just an exciting feeling of collaborating with someone who is also good in the industry. In fact, I have one song that I collaborated on with my friend. Its title is Pain Killer.

What’s next for you this year—any upcoming releases or projects?

My goal this year is to finish my Pain Killer album. I’ve already uploaded 4 songs, and they’re available on all music platforms and different social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok. I still have 5 more songs to go.

Where do you see your music career heading in the next few years?

Honestly, I still don’t know yet. I don’t really think about what will happen in the future. I’m just focused on what’s happening right now because I know that what I achieve or who I become someday is the result of all the hard work I put in today. I just never forget to enjoy and do what makes me happy.
