Claws Out, Volume Up: The Feline Fury of Ultra Mega Cat Attack

Singapore’s Ultra Mega Cat Attack (UMCA) refuses to follow the rules. Loud, unpredictable, and unapologetically energetic, the band has carved out a space where chaos becomes art and performance turns into pure release.

Blending alt-rock grit with dance-punk rhythm and a theatrical edge, UMCA doesn’t just perform songs—they build an experience. Every set feels like a collision of sound, movement, and emotion, where synths pulse, guitars cut through the noise, and the crowd is pulled straight into the storm.

Behind the feline-inspired name lies a collective driven by experimentation and instinct, shaping music that is as playful as it is powerful. From underground stages to festival crowds, UMCA continues to challenge what a rock band from Southeast Asia can look and sound like.

In this City Stories feature, we go beyond the noise and into the world of Ultra Mega Cat Attack—exploring their creative process, their identity, and the energy that keeps their “controlled chaos” alive.

The name Ultra Mega Cat Attack is unforgettable—what’s the story behind it?
It really started with a common love – cats (and all animals, really)! From there, we knew we wanted to start a rock band that was a limitless guilty pleasure of all our favourite genres, and the way we describe it is like an onslaught of adorable cats – hence, ULTRA MEGA CAT ATTACK. Also, we really wanted an over-the-top unforgettable name, haha.

How did the band form, and what brought you all together creatively?
We were all already friends and in separate bands before coming together in one single band! It just made sense since we were all already hanging out, and at a point in life where we no longer cared about making music for others – we just wanted to make music for ourselves, and to have all the fun in life haha.

How would you describe your sound to someone hearing you for the first time?

Especially with our latest EP, “THE FUTURE IS MEOW”, we’re getting happier and heavier. It’s a mix of rock, metal and pop, with catchy hooks that you can dance and bop to on a road trip. At the core of this band, it will always be a kickass rock band, with music that gives us, and (we hope) others, a release.

What usually comes first when you create—lyrics, melody, or pure chaos?
Hahaha, there’s chaos and melodies for sure, but eventually if a melody or riff sticks in our minds for some time, we’ll start writing at home with the parts to a full song – intro, verse, chorus etc – then ensuring that melody and song fits together nicely. There’s no formula really, but I think we’ve all learned over time that no matter what, the melody is king. Songs have to have hooks, period.

Your music feels playful but tight—how do you balance fun with musicianship?

To be brutally honest, while some of us definitely do care about musicianship, all of us care more about fun. It’s really a happy coincidence that after much fine-tuning together in the studio, the end product usually comes out playful and tight, and most importantly something that we can listen to on repeat, and something that we’re genuine fans of!

Who are your biggest musical influences, and how do they shape your sound?
Oh man, where do we start! There are so many! We’ll give you a list, but really these artists’ music are so ingrained into us, it comes out in our playing unconsciously all the time! Some very, very important artists to us will always be:
– The Beatles
– Slipknot
– Dua Lipa
– John Mayer
– The Prodigy
– Jimmy Eat World
– Death Cab For Cutie
– Rage Against The Machine
– My Chemical Romance
– Ghost
– Marilyn Manson
– KISS

Is there a song in your catalog that best represents who you are as a band right now?
The latest EP (THE FUTURE IS MEOW) really sums it up, but if we HAD to choose just one song in our catalog right now, it will be “Gonna Be Alright” or “SHIN HOTTIE” – heavy, happy, and almost anthemic in nature, songs made for a good time!

Your energy stands out—what can fans expect from a live Ultra Mega Cat Attack show?
Thank you for your kind words! We’re honoured to have fans around the world, it consistently blows our mind! At an UMCA show, you can be prepared to dance, sing, and have a laughing good time in a safe, judgement-free zone. We guarantee that we’ll be dancing, singing and rocking out with you all the way through!

Do you approach live performances differently from recording in the studio?
YES. Live performances are always the thing we look forward to most, and they’re our chance to give people the best (sometimes longest) versions of songs that we may not always have on our albums. While recordings can be about capturing a feeling in the precious few minutes we have in a single song, live performances, to us, are about releasing all the feelings we have together with our audience. It has to be the ultimate release and good time!

What’s the wildest or most memorable moment you’ve had on stage?
We’ve had quite a few, but one of the ones that stands out was when we played at a university show, and the students had literally JUST finished their exams, and were ready to go absolutely berserk and party. The whole show was electric from start to finish, and by the end of the show, there were some fans on the stage dancing with us! It was so happy and fun!

There’s a strong sense of humor and personality in your brand—how intentional is that?
It’s just us, hahaha. What’s the point in playing music if it isn’t gonna be fun! Hahaha.

What do you hope listeners feel after hearing your music?
We hope they feel what we felt after listening to our favourite bands – the euphoric feeling that you can do anything that you set your mind to. Life can be hard, but it IS beautiful. You just have to work hard, dream big, and dare to be happy! It’s a challenge and struggle on some days, but if we can do it, so can you!

How has your journey in the indie scene been so far?
There have definitely been ups and downs. We don’t fit into a particular genre all the time, and that’s where it gets a bit hard to place us sometimes. That said, it blows our mind that people come to our shows whenever we play, and it makes us so happy that they can have a great time with us!

All in all, we just gotta keep working hard and smart, and do our best to get our music to as many people as possible!

What challenges have you faced as an independent band?
We have 6 members in our band, and it’s always the logistics of bringing everyone together. Also, we all have full-time day jobs, so sometimes touring can be hard. Also, Singapore has extremely limited gigging locations and opportunites, so we try as much as we can to venture out and tour.

Are there artists or bands you’d love to collaborate with?
We’re so different from them, and we can never compare, but we’d LOVE to collaborate with Lawrence, Ghost, and maybe even Rage Against The Machine. Too many to name!

We do however, always try to collaborate with the local Adoption Shelters and Centres every live gig, so that a portion of all proceeds can go to them, to help sustain them and the incredible work they do for animals in need.

What can fans look forward to in the coming months—new music, shows, or surprises?
We’re already working on new music, so look out for that hehehe.

Are there any dream goals you’re hoping to achieve soon?
It sounds so cliche and naive, but we always hope to work towards the point where we can do music for a living. I think realistically, we’re looking forward to our next tour across Asia and maybe even in America – most likely in 2027!
