Singer-songwriter Nicole Robertson returns with her latest single, “Narcissist,” an alternative R&B track about something that may feel all too familiar to many people: knowing that a relationship is no longer healthy, yet still finding it difficult to leave. Sometimes, we already know that something is wrong. We simply choose to stay.
Following the release of her debut single, “Dance Tonight,” on June 26, 2026, Nicole explores a darker and more personal side of herself with “Narcissist.” The song delves into manipulation, self-doubt, repeated forgiveness, and the difficulty of walking away from someone who can hurt us deeply while still being incredibly charming.
“Narcissist” was originally written in 2023, while Nicole was still in the relationship that inspired the song. Two years later, in 2025, she revisited the track and developed it into a demo after sharing a snippet of its chorus on her Instagram Story. It began with a simple moment of uncertainty—she wasn’t sure what song to sing, so she decided to write one of her own.
“When I wrote this song, I already knew that something was wrong. But I was still stuck in that relationship,” Nicole shares.»
That is where “Narcissist” begins. Nicole wanted to capture the experience of knowing that something isn’t right, yet still struggling to leave when pain becomes intertwined with affection, apologies, promises to change, and the realization that the person others know can be very different from the person you experience inside the relationship.
That feeling comes through clearly in the lyrics:
“You make me question who I am / Turn every ‘sorry’ into a scam.”
And later:
“You left me in pieces and called it love / But you know that’s not love — and I loved you.”
For Nicole, those lines represent the heart of the song. “Narcissist” is not simply about hating someone who has caused you pain. It is about recognizing that a relationship has hurt you while still acknowledging that, at one point, you genuinely loved that person.
The song takes listeners through feelings of confusion, self-doubt, anger, and sadness before eventually reaching a turning point: beginning to trust what they feel and what they have experienced for themselves again.
Musically, “Narcissist” blends alternative R&B, intimate storytelling, emotional tension, and a darker, cinematic atmosphere. Its sound mirrors the emotional push and pull that comes with being caught inside a relationship that can be difficult to understand.
The concept is also reflected in the artwork for “Narcissist.” The male figure is intentionally blurred, while Nicole remains in focus. The visual represents how someone she once thought she knew gradually became harder to distinguish from the persona he presented to others. In the end, the focus returns to Nicole and, most importantly, to what she experienced.
For Nicole, releasing “Narcissist” is about more than simply telling her own story. She hopes the song can also become a companion for people who may find themselves in a similar situation.
